Rick Derringer plays with Steely Dan (Tribute)
Playing with Rick Derringer at Newport Rocks the Fort in the Summer of 2014 was a great experience for Hey Nineteen. Rick is such a pioneer in Rock and Roll and most people have no idea. A few Rick Derringer facts:
- Rick Derringer played guitar on a number of Steely Dan tunes: Chain Lightning, Show Biz Kids, My Rival
- He played with Edgar and Johnny Winters, being the guitarist on the hit song-Frankenstein
- Rick of course wrote and recorded the Classic Rock Hit – Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo
- His original foray into fame was with the McCoys when he was 17 years old they had a # 1 hit called Hang On Sloopy. This song was knocked out of 1st position by the Beatles- Yesterday!

Rick Derringer (born Ricky Dean Zehringer; August 5, 1947) is an American guitarist, vocalist, Grammy Award winning producer and entertainer.
Derringer came to prominence in the 1960s as a member of The McCoys, who had a number one hit single with “Hang on Sloopy.” Derringer then turned to blues rock, scoring a 1974 hit with “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo“. He has also worked extensively with brothers Edgar and Johnny Winter, and with the group Steely Dan.
